Another old friend of La Vuelta returns this year. The Alto de El Morredero, in Ponferrada, will be one of the race’s final deciders during the last week of the competition. This long climb departs from Ponferrada, whose summit has only ever seen national riders emerge victorious: Roberto Heras in 1997 and Alejandro Valverde in 2006. The rider from Murcia also conquered its slopes during La Vuelta a Castilla y León.
