The Alto de la Farrapona made itself known to the wide cycling public during La Vuelta in 2011. It did so through the toughness of its slopes and the beauty of a climb whose summit marks the border between Asturias and León. In that edition, the climb towards the Lagos de Somiedo shared the spotlight with Angliru, conquered the following day. In 2025, it will be the third time that both summits follow on from one another during the Asturian portion of the race.
